About Me

Welcome to my personal space! I'm Umberto Junior Mele, a passionate researcher and educator deeply immersed in the field of artificial intelligence. Located in the scenic city of Lugano, Switzerland, I find myself at the intersection of academia and innovation, exploring the vast potential of AI to transform our world.

My academic path began at the Sapienza Università di Roma, where I pursued a Bachelor's in Management Engineering and a Master's in Data Science. These formative years instilled in me a strong foundation in computer science, mathematics, and statistics. Currently, as a PhD candidate at the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI), I am exploring the application of machine learning to combinatorial optimization. Under the mentorship of Prof. Roberto Montemanni and Prof. Luca Maria Gambardella.

At the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence, I engage in groundbreaking research, contributing to the field through publications and conference presentations. Journal publications and prizes in international competitions are just a few of the notable accomplishments along this journey. As a Teaching Assistant at USI, I have the privilege of guiding and inspiring the next generation of AI specialists. My role involves creating course materials, conducting lectures, and supervising master's thesis projects.

My Vision

I believe in the power of artificial intelligence to create a better future. My goal is to contribute to this field through continuous research, collaboration, and the sharing of knowledge. I am committed to pushing the boundaries of AI, unraveling its complexities, and uncovering its potential to revolutionize how we live and work.

Beyond the AI

Music and dance are essential parts of my life. Engaging with the piano over many years has deepened my understanding and appreciation of classical music. Meanwhile, salsa and bachata dancing infuse my life with rhythmic vitality and happiness.
